Volunteer Medical Placements in Mexico

Our medical placements in Mexico are in hospitals in the city of Guadalajara in departments such as gynaecology, haematology, obstetrics, paediatrics, pathology, anaesthesia and surgery. Placements mainly involve observation work but with some hands on experience when the doctors feel you are competent enough to participate in a practical way. The practical work may involve simple tasks like bandaging as well as more dramatic work like helping deliver a baby!

Working in this kind of proximity with medical staff would simply not be possible in Europe or North America without full medical qualifications. So this placement offers a wealth of opportunities to undertake worthwhile hands-on medical experience. You will have a supervising doctor to be your mentor and to ensure that you have a varied and meaningful project by transferring you to different areas of hospital.

On average a volunteer will work 6 hours per day from Monday until Friday and will undertake different duties according to their capability and skills. Duties include observation, consultations, helping with surgery and if you are interested, taking part in English lessons and conversation clubs with the personnel of the hospital.

Volunteers need to speak some Spanish to join our Mexican medical programme. If you are unsure as to whether your Spanish is good enough for the programme please give us a call. Many volunteers who lack confidence in their Spanish language skills join a teaching or care project before joining their medical programme. This gives them the opportunity to brush up their language skills before the medical part of their placement.
