When I landed in Guadalajara's airport I was far from home, in a country I had never been to before that spoke a different language than my own. I was also in a place where, for the first time, I looked like everybody else. Being from the central United States I was used to being the one that looked different. But when I came as a volunteer, a foreigner, my looks made me blend right in.

I came to Mexico not sure what to expect. I had already worked in a German hospital for some time but was not sure if this would be similar. Actually it is the total opposite. In Germany I learned the most about the job of a nurse, here I am being treated as if I was a qualified physician; they even call me Dr. Nina.

My trip to Mexico will probably be one of the most memorable summers of my life. Not only did I get the opportunity to shadow Mexican doctors as they attended surgery and clinics, but I got to travel around what is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful and hospitable countries in the world.
